As a science major, I like to stick with what is provable and knowable. I often wonder why so many people, live, die, and kill in the name of something that is unprovable. I'm talking of religion, of course. I ask myself, would we be better off without religion at all?

In this Times Online article, agnostic John Humphrys discusses why people believe, and what place religion still holds in our world. Really made me think, I hope you can take something from it too.

Nifflas is one of my favorite independent game developers. Within a Deep Forest involves a bouncy ball saving the world; a good amount of skill is required. Knytt is a game with very simple gameplay, but beautiful and serene landscapes with music to match. The newly released Knytt Stories seems to be the perfect blend of both. All three games are captivating despite their simple pixelated style. Should you ever feel the desire to explore vast alien terrains with plenty of surprises and secrets, check out Nifflas's games--they still rank among my favorites.

"A group of people with assorted eye colors live on an island. They are all perfect logicians -- if a conclusion can be logically deduced, they will do it instantly. No one knows the color of their eyes. Every night at midnight, a ferry stops at the island. If anyone has figured out the color of their own eyes, they [must] leave the island that midnight. Everyone can see everyone else at all times and keeps a count of the number of people they see with each eye color (excluding themselves), but they cannot otherwise communicate. Everyone on the island knows all the rules in this paragraph.

On this island there are 100 blue-eyed people, 100 brown-eyed people, and the Guru (she happens to have green eyes). So any given blue-eyed person can see 100 people with brown eyes and 99 people with blue eyes (and one with green), but that does not tell him his own eye color; as far as he knows the totlas could be 101 brown and 99 blue. Or 100 brown, 99 blue, and he could have red eyes.

The Guru is allowed to speak once (let's say at noon), on one day in all their endless years on the island. Standing before the islanders, she says the following:

"I can see someone who has blue eyes."

Who leaves the island, and on what night?

There are no mirrors or reflecting surfaces, nothing dumb, It is not a trick question, and the answer is logical. It doesn't depend on tricky wording or anyone lying or guessing, and it doesn't involve people doing something silly like creating a sign language or doing genetics. The Guru is not making eye contact with anyone in particular; she's simply saying "I count at least one blue-eyed person on this island who isn't me."

And lastly, the answer is not "no one leaves."

I've done my best to make the wording as precise and unambiguious as possible (after working through the explanation with many people), but if you're confused about anything, please let me know. A word of warning: The answer is not simple. This is an exercise in serious logic, not a lateral thinking riddle. There is not a quick-and-easy answer, and really understanding it takes some effort."

I've always rather disliked the Mario Bros. movie, because it's so radically untrue to the games in nearly every way. This article aims to prove me wrong, and goes on to discuss why the movie is an underrated masterpiece. I have to admit, I haven't seen the movie in quite some years, so upon another viewing I may find I agree with a lot of his points, and actually find myself a convert in favor of this movie. Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Hairstyles of the 70s

A little while ago there was this viral marketing campaign set up for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, in a bunch of major cities. A bunch of LED displays of the Mooninites were set up in inconspicuous locales. In Boston, this was treated as a bomb threat. The two guys hired by Adult Swim to set up these ads were arrested. Some say the city of Boston overreacted to the campaign, and I for one agree. I understand how unknown electronics have a potential to be dangerous, but come on, what terrorist would place bombs in visible locations with the Mooninites on them? The two recently held a press conference, in which they opted instead of discussing the trial against them, discussing the much more interesting topic of haircuts from the 70s. Good recovery, I say. They somehow are sneaking out of this without losing fan support it seems.

This whole thing bears a certain resemblance to a case last year where a young group was arrested for making Mario question blocks that were suspected of being bombs. To me these are both cases of trying to push up security far too much, restricting the realm of public art (whether you want to consider viral marketing ads as "art" is up to you). It's not right that we should live in such fear. What we don't know isn't always out to kill us. You know, I think I'm gonna make some Mario blocks sometime and set them up all over campus. I can 100% assure you that not a single person will see them as dangerous. Well, let's see if I'll ever get around to it.

Narbacular Drop

You may have heard of the game coming out soon called Portal, which uses the Half Life Source engine to make a 1st-person puzzle game using portals that you can place anywhere, with one leading to the other. It sounds very exciting, but you don't have to wait for its release to get a glimpse of what it's like. Narbacular Drop is, essentially, the original. It was developed by students at DigiPen, and once the guys at Valve saw it, they immediately hired the students to develop Portal. It's the same idea, two portals, one leading to the other, but it's free. Even after I'm done with the puzzles (there are additional puzzles available from the site anyway), it's just fun to screw around with the portals. You can set them up so you can see yourself through the portals, or have one on the ceiling and another on the floor for infinite freefall! I highly suggest you give it a try.

So Facebook has implimented a new "mini-feed," which essentially tells you everything that all of your friends do on Facebook. So far it's been met with widespread disapproval, with people saying it's creepy and stalker-ish. I personally don't mind it. Maybe it's because I know I'm not in much danger of being stalked. But in any case, stalkers will be stalkers no matter what you give them. If you don't want them following your every move, don't update your status every time you're clipping your toenails. It doesn't give them any new information, it just makes it easier to see an overview of what everyone is up to, which I find convenient. So stop your whining, and get used to it. It's actually kinda useful.

(You know, it probably doesn't help my case that my Facebook status directly prior to the release of the mini-feed was "probably stalking you right now.")

Comics I Really Should Stop Reading

I had a dream last night, wherein I was hanging out with my brother and someone who doesn't exist, but was apparently a female friend of his. He left (went to sleep I think), so we were hanging out, and she was really awesome, and we ended up kissing-- a somewhat long tender kiss, but no tongue or anything. My dreams are extremly tactile, I can remember the kiss better than I can anything visually or audially from the dream--I don't even remember the girl's hair color. But it kind of sucks when I wake up and realize she isn't real. Oh well, we were mad at each other by the end of the dream anyway--don't even really remember the reason. I think we were playing some sort of WWII game, and she was pissed she lost or something, but I was all "what does she expect when she's with the Third Reich." I wonder if one can turn one's dreams in to a continuing series. I'd hate to end it like that.

In all seriousness though, those kind of dreams are bittersweet--they always leave me a little depressed, but at the same time, this one kind of charged me up, and makes that kind of interpersonal connection seem a little less distant. Who knows, maybe this girl does exist somewhere. Maybe she's closer than I think.

Anyway. These are comics which really aren't all that great, but I can't stop reading them for some reason.

The author clearly has no idea where he's going with his stories, and always either tries too hard to hit a joke, or, when advanicng the plot, tries to force one that doesn't really work. A lot of the past storylines were actually clever and funny, but it's really going downhill as of late. But he keeps just enough mystery hidden just around the corner, that I can't stop reading. A testament to my human weakness, I suppose.

Such a fun stupid little browser-based RPG. Very satiric and silly. Lots of references to other similar games, as well as They Might Be Giants (and other such music). It rewards cleverness and wit--for example, if you've got an extra key lying around, cook it with a lime in a pie and you get key lime pie. It's a good timewaster if you've got 15-20 minutes to waste every couple days.

Last weekend was one of the best weekends ever.

There was an art & comic con at MoCCA in NYC. A bunch of people on Truth and Beauty Bombs are webcomic artists, so they all had tables at it. So they and a slew of forum members all met in New York City for assorted hijinx! It was quite awesome. It started Friday night, when I met the entire webcomic community in a hot dog joint: Ryan North (Dinosaur Comics), David Malki ! (Wondermark), Jeph Jacques (Questionable Content), Andy Runton (Owly), Steve Carey (Poppycock Theater), Chris Yates (Reprographics), and more! Seriously, if someone had bombed the restaurant, there'd be nobody left to make webcomics. I was quite intimidated. Any of them that I didn't get a chance to introduce myself to then I did at MoCCA the next day. So I bought stuff from all of the above, plus Dale Beran and David Hellman (A Lesson Is Learned), Joey Comeau (A Softer World), and Kent Earle and Scott I-don't-know-his-last-name (White Ninja Comics). The rest of the weekend was spent with the coolest group of webcomic fans ever, wandering about the city--pics here and here. We went to a couple museums, bought books at Strands (18 miles of books, they boast), and shopped for punk/goth clothes in St. Mark's. In all it was an amazing weekend, even if it did leave me nearly broke. I wait in eager anticipation of next year.

The last two years before I came here to Stevens Tech, the DeBaun Theatre (located on campus) has put on both Godspell and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown--both shows that I did in high school. Now they're continuting that tradition with Into The Woods next spring. It's basically a hodgepodge of fairy tales in which all hell essentially breaks loose. Naturally, I'm stoked--it's one of my favorite shows, and it's being directed by my favorite director to work with, Aaron Bogad, who also directed me in The Rocky Horror Show and Batboy. In high school, I played Jack, of Beanstalk fame. I'm probably going to try for that role again, if not for one of the princes--Cinderella's or Rapunzel's, which are both very fun roles too--Cinderella's Prince especially, though I'd probably have a much better chance as Rapunzel's. Eh, I'm probably going for Jack again in any case.

Dinosaur Comics is a comic about dinosaurs. How surprising. The interesting thing is that the pictures never change. Every comic is the same clipart picture of T-Rex, Dromiciomimus (God I hope I spelled that right) and Utahraptor, discussing topics ranging from philosophy to personal regrets to kissing two ladies at once. Ryan North (its author) is my hero. He's also responsible for such projects as Oh No Robot, a webcomic search engine. and RSSPect, which can turn any website into an RSS feed. Ryan is also the administrator of Truth and Beauty Bombs, the sexiest message board you'll ever come across. All the members are truly wonderful people; it's amazing they were all able to find this one place to convene, with little interruption from the usual message board folderol. It's also the official home of the "Garfield is funnier if you take away his thought bubbles" meme. If you look closely in the background, you can see me making one or two keen observations (I'm MvCRage)! There are now a couple projects out there that have run with the idea, taking a close look at how pathetic Jon really is when you strip away the witty quips of his anthropomorphic housepet. Could it be that my remark is what spurred the entire "Arbuckle is a sad creature" perspective? Eh, probably not. But it'd be cool if it was.

Woo, tangent.

Back to what I was originally talking about, Dinosaur Comics is one of my favorite webcomics, which is why I've decided to put it in the sidebar. I suggest you read a few, and don't forget to read the hidden punchlines-- One from hovering your mouse over the comic, one inside the "comment" subject, and one from the title of the comic in the archive. That's four punchlines per comic (including the unhidden one)! I'm probably gonna add another 2 or 3 links in the sidebar, and introduce them later (this post ran a little long). I'll promise they won't all be webcomics! Maybe!

I'd like to introduce you to one of my favorite time-wasting websites, eyezmaze. It's a collection of Flash games made by this Japanese guy, which of course means it's going to be bizarre. He tries to make each game easy to understand without any written instruction, which is a good thing, since it's obvious English is not his first language. The best games are the Grow games. You just drag various objects onto the ball in the center, and watch as they grow and interact. That's all there is to it--though it takes a while to find the best order to put them in in order to get a perfect score. There's four different Grow games, so they'll keep you busy for a while.

A less cerebral game is Tontie, which is essentially just whack-a-mole to the EXTREME. On the other side of the intellectual spectrum is chronon, which just got released, and I'm still nowhere near beating it. It sort of reminds me of Majora's Mask, in the sense that what you do at one time of day affects things at later times. Like, put the clock on the wall, and the time will change. Get the hands to point the right way and woohoo, you got the key! That's all I'm gonna tell you, because, hey, figuring it out is all the fun.

It's about time that I switch to a blog site that people have actually heard of. It's nice and simple, and somewhat respectable too. I'm gonna try to actually update this one on a somewhat regular basis.

For now, what I'm gonna do is just share some of my favorite links. I have quite a few interesting ones, and I always want to share them with someone, so now I can share them here, and it won't annoy you if you don't really care.

I'll start with Look Around You. It's a set of BBC "educational programs" that run about 8 or 9 minutes long each. When I watched "Maths," I at first thought it was a real in-the-classroom show. Once they suggested that the largest number was probably around 45 billion, I started to catch on. My favorites are Maths, Water, and Iron, but they're all pretty funny.
